Dr. Bhat and his team have been trained by the foremost experts in the field (Dr. Frank Schallenberger MD and the America Academy of Ozone Therapy) to safely and effectively provide Ozone Therapy to improve the health of his patients.
What is ozone therapy good for?? While it is not FDA approved to treat any disease, here are some primary disease applications documented in the research:
- Coronary artery and cardiovascular disease
- Gangrene (skin and soft tissue infections)
- Macular degeneration (best results on dry, but can sometimes help wet)
- Open angle glaucoma
- Chronic fatigue
- Oncology
- Acute Infections
- Chronic infections (EBV, CMV, Lyme, Hepatitis, Herpes I & II, Parasites)
- Cutaneous fungi (skin or nail fungus)
- Interstitial cystitis (chronic UTI)
- Dental ostitis
- Sinus Infections
- Allergies/Dermatitis
- Auto-immune disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Aging/anti-aging/wellness
- Pre-conditioning (before surgery/anesthesia, or intense physical activity)
What does a treatment look like?
The most effective way to administer ozone is a technique called Major Auto-Hemotherapy (MAH) that has been around since the 1960s. It uses intravenous (IV) access to allow for the most widespread effects without any possibility of negatively affecting the gut bacteria. After an IV is placed, 100-200mL of your blood is collected in a bag containing three other substances: saline, calcium chloride (to enhance the ozone effect), and heparin (a natural blood thinner used to ensure the blood does not clot during the process and also enhances the ozone). Once the correct amount of blood is collected, a specific dose of ozone gas predetermined by Dr Bhat is injected into the bag, so it bubbles through the blood, producing ozonides that interact with the red and white blood cells. The bag is gently rocked for 2-5 minutes until the blood turns bright red then it is re-infused through the same IV back into your circulation. The entire process takes about 1 hour.
We also offer Minor Auto-Hemotherapy (mAH) which is a a process of which 5mL of blood are drawn out of a vein, ozonated, and then injected back into a muscle like the shoulder or glute. This technique is faster but does not have as systemic a response due to the smaller volume of blood that is treated.
What does it do/how does it work?
Ozone is less of a medical/pharmaceutical treatment and more of a biological/physiologic modulator. Since ozone can be made in the office from pure oxygen, it is not really a food or a drug and partially why the FDA does not regulate its applications. It stimulates the body’s innate ability to produce energy, and heal itself, much like osteopathic treatments.
Many people are hearing about the healing benefits of seemingly stressful or uncomfortable practices, specifically sauna, cold plunge, fasting and high intensity interval training (HIIT). These practices, along with Ozone Therapy, fall under the concept of “hormesis” in which small controlled doses of a stress or pressure can lead to a beneficial effect, specifically an increases in overall resilience. Ozone therapy works on the basic form of molecular stress, oxidative stress.
The effects of the ozone are two fold; firstly, it creates ozonides that last weeks to months to increase oxygen utilization and mitochondrial energy production (NAD); and secondly, it produces cytokines to reduce our immune system’s dependence on antibodies and improve the function of the innate or cellular immune system which is much faster and more adaptable. The combination of these two effects is extremely powerful for almost any ailment and makes it an extremely potent wellness and anti-aging treatment to prevent future illness and disease.
How often do I need to be treated?
Most conditions start to respond to 8-12 MAH treatments spaced out over 6 months, with a goal of continuing treatment around once a month. Typically, we start with a lower dose and repeat the treatments more regularly at the beginning (first 3-4 treatments spaced 1-2 weeks apart) After that most patients do really well with monthly treatments, however some fall into a quarterly, or yearly schedule depending on their individual health and goals.
Are there any side effects or downsides to the treatment?
Since there are really just 3 substances in the treatment, ozone, calcium chloride, and heparin, and the treatment is done on your own blood, the complication rate of this procedure is less than 0.0007% based on a study of over 5.5 million treatments published in a paper in 1982. The reported side effects were mild symptoms such as nausea, headache, tiredness (i.e. “detox reactions”)
Of course with any IV procedure there is always the small risk of bleeding, pain or infection at the site, however compared to every other IV treatment, MAH has demonstrated a time tested safety and efficacy that is one of the lowest in all of medicine.
Finally due to not being FDA approved, it is unlikely that any health or medical insurance will cover the treatment despite its long track record of safety and efficacy.
We look forward to seeing you for an Ozone treatment soon! If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us, or schedule a 30 minute telehealth visit with Dr. Bhat to get the process started.
